Freedom Neighborhood One
Founded in 2003, Bristol Weed & Seed is a coalition of
residents, businesses, non-profits, elected officials, and
government agencies who have an interest in revitalizing this
area of 2,400 residents. The targeted community includes the
neighborhoods of Bloomsdale/Fleetwing, Venice Ashby, Green
Lawn Park, and Pacific Avenue in Bristol Township, Bucks
County, Pennsylvania. These neighborhoods, largely populated
by African Americans, struggle with quality of life issues
such as poverty, drugs, unemployment, and crime.
The group of diverse parties began to assemble in 2003 to
work collaboratively and comprehensively on improving the
community. The group had a series of brainstorming and deliberation
sessions about the strengths and challenges of the
neighborhoods. Ultimately, these conversations resulted in a
strategic plan. The plan was forwarded to the national office
of Weed & Seed along with an application for official
recognition. When filing the application, the coalition named
itself "Freedom Neighborhood One". In March of 2004,
the national office approved the application, making Freedom
Neighborhood One eligible for federal funds for up to five
years.
